The RAC 5 – Rachel Peterson
Who are your favorite artists?
Van Gogh for his staccato strokes, Matisse for his colors, Dmitri Wright for his playful dancing brush.
Describe your artwork in 5 words.
Magical, engaging, storytelling, bright, bold.
Do you listen to anything while you are working on your art?
Yes, the Stock Market!
What is the most challenging part of your creative process?
I’m always so excited to begin…laying out the “bones” of the composition. However, it is most fun in the middle picking up colorful swatches from Home Depot…seeing how the colors play against one another. The end of the painting is usually difficult and a lot of the time frustrating. I must make sure the composition holds together and invites the viewer in. When I find a spot for my signature and for “Woofy,” my dog, my painting is finished!
If you could ask a piece of artwork, come to life, what would it be?
We have just had a 3-4 inch snow storm… Our second one, so if I could ask a piece of my artwork to come to life, I would like to be at Coney island on the beach experiencing the excitement, smelling the hot dogs and watching the waves roll in…the surfers “hang ten” and the sunbathers strut their stuff! (Here is Rachel with that painting hanging in the Marine and Coastal show last year when she was awarded 3rd Place!)
