In Memoriam

Edith McClean

We are saddened by the passing of beloved RAC member Edith McClean on June 4 at her home at the age of 101. Edith lived in Rowayton for over 50 years and was a devoted painter – painting until age 95 even though she suffered a degenerative eye disease. She was an active member at RAC for many years winning numerous awards for her acrylic paintings and woodblock prints.

Member Spotlight

The RAC 5 – Dana Laird

Born and raised in Rowayton, Dana received a BS in Studio Art and a minor in Art History from Skidmore College. She has been an exhibiting member of RAC since 1985. (Here she is next to her photograph “Pale Roses,” part of RAC’s In the Garden show!)

What started you on your creative path?

My mom worked in a doctor’s office and she brought home used X-Ray paper which I filled with drawings of cityscapes inhabited by animals.

What medium do you work in and why?

Primarily I work with photography but I also make photographic collages, so I feel like I am building something. I took painting and figure drawing classes for several years at Silvermine School of Art.

Do you work on multiple pieces at once?

Yes; I will put a piece aside if I am stuck. Also; other pieces are born from cast-offs of other collages.

What can’t you leave the house without?

This is everyone’s answer but my phone is an annoyingly effective camera. In addition I am not questioned if I am using it as such. I have had my DSLR out and have been forbidden to use it because of rules.

What inspires your artwork?

I see all things around me; how they fit together, patterns created and little magical views that might otherwise be overlooked.

Welcome to RAC new Exhibiting Members Soledad Bence, David Gorski, George Radwan and Brooke Sessions! And also congratulations to our new Lifetime Members Judy Katz, Wendy Moore and Eunice Roy.
