Member Spotlight

The RAC 5 – Amy W. Schott

Amy was born in Rowayton, raised in Darien and has been a Wilton resident for 22 years. She has been a RAC exhibiting member since 2012 as well as a board member 2012-2020. Amy earned a BFA at Syracuse University in Editorial Design and Illustration, which led to a Graphic Design career before studying Mixed Media at the Silvermine Arts Center 2003-2014.

What started you on your creative path?

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be an artist. I grew up in a family of artists that included many generations. As a young artist I had a commercial style, Pop Art being a major influence, leading to a graphic design career. After several decades I stepped away from the computer and started to study Mixed Media with Barbara Rothenberg at the Silvermine Arts Center. Every Wednesday she had me scrambling with homework to get ready for a weekly critique. She always said “make another.” Best teacher ever!

What medium do you work in and why?

Mixed media, because of my love of collecting vintage items which include maps, cards, books, stamps, cigar bands and all kinds of ephemera.

Describe your artwork in 5 words.

Collective, intricate, colorful, shadowy, nostalgic.

What is the most challenging part of your creative process?

The challenge of assemblage, it is also labor intensive having to cut various weights of paper and wood.

Do you work on multiple pieces at once?

Always! I start by gathering materials that work together and create various piles. When I know I have the right amount, I begin to create my shadow boxes and multilayered collages, often using wire and nails to support the work.
