Instructor: Lenny Moskowitz

Fee: $125 Sat only/$240 Sat & Sun

This workshop will focus on developing abstract imagery. Students will investigate contemporary abstraction and discover ways to generate and compose their own abstract imagery. Some of the approaches we will be using are collage, mixed-media painting, the basics of color theory, creating composition, simplification, as well as how to use values to manipulate space and create a sense of depth. This workshop is available to students at all levels because it is tailored to each individual participant and it is especially suited for people who are looking to learn how to work more loosely. It will be great for a beginner who has never worked abstractly. Previous experience is not necessary – the only prerequisite is to come with a curiosity and willingness to experiment.

Materials: Scissors, glue, pencils, sketchpad, old magazines (preferably magazines that are colorful, like fashion, home and garden, etc.), paint (your choice, acrylic or watercolor), a couple of brushes, a palette to mix paint on, painting surfaces (such as canvas boards, a stretch canvas, or paper), a water jar. If you’re using acrylics it’s nice to have a medium, which is clear acrylic paint with no pigment in it. This comes in gloss or matte. I prefer the matte because the paint is matte. A spray bottle for water you can use to keep your palette from drying out. I also bring materials as well so don’t worry if you don’t have something. You will be able to use mine.

*My favorite sketchpad is the Strathmore Bristol smooth surface 11”x14” 100lb. These can be found in every art supply store – but any smooth surface paper will work!

Students can choose to register for Saturday only at the cost of $125 or for the weekend at $240.
