Level: Teens and Adults

11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Instructor: Mari Gyorgyey

Fee: $50 (includes all art supplies)

One of the great appeals of drawing with pen and ink is the clean, high contrast image that can be created with simple tools.  However, it’s often difficult to achieve all the variations you desire in value gradation.  In this workshop, Mari will teach you how to use cross-hatching, stippling and pointillism to create darks and lights and every value in between. You’ll also learn about simple brush techniques that can bring a painterly quality to your images.

Mari will be teaching by demonstration and will introduce works from some of the great ink artists such as Van Gogh and Saul Steinberg.  Expect to be kept busy experimenting and drawing for the entire workshop

Mari Gyorgyey is best known for her nonlinear narrative art which flows into book arts, pen and ink drawings, paintings, computer imagery, and fine art etchings. She is not afraid to mix any of the techniques to communicate her theme.Mari’s approach can be described as figurative and expressionistic. Her quirky and satirical drawings have been compared to Philip Evergood, and William Kentridge and the pre-war drawings of George Grosz. Since earning her BFA from RISD, and MFA from UPENN, Gyorgyey has shown her work domestically and internationally with solo shows in Tapio Gyorgy, Hungary, Budapest, Hungary as well as Stamford, CT., U.S.A. She has won printmaking awards from UPENN, Dharma Silk Company, and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, where she is a longtime member.
