Too often, artists approach the task of writing an artist statement from scratch – as though they were reinventing the wheel each time they attempt to tell others (applications for residencies, dealers, jurors) who they are and what they do. This writing salon will provide us with the elements of Description and Narration we will need in order to write from a place of authenticity; it will hold space for supportive and professional community, and show us how to continue to be productive once class is through. Participants will exit the salon with the ability to write a mission and work statement that speaks authentically and confidently about who they are and what they do – with ease!

We will be limiting the number of participants to ten.

Note: this class will be taught online using Zoom.  Please download and become familiar with the app prior to the start of class.  A zoom invite will be emailed to you a few days before the start of the session.

About the Instructor:

Sarah Schmerler is a dynamic writing specialist and art critic who has been teaching artists how to write for more than 20 years. She developed her own art-writing methodology at The New School, and has lectured at Yale, Parsons, Pace University, Pratt Institute, The Lower East Side Print Shop, Montclair State University, Chashama, The Brooklyn Arts Council, Pierogi Gallery, and other venues. As a private consultant, she has written artist statements, mission statements, applications for graduate schools, residency and grant proposals, cover letters, book proposals, press releases, bios (short and narrative), and even entire websites for artists—who have gone on to great success.

She enjoys helping visual people find words that serve their work.

Her classes are engaging, interactive, and effective, and we are excited to have her return for this intimate salon-style class!
