April 2023 Newsletter

Thanks to all who joined us for our open house in the gallery March 8 – especially our 6TD Commissioners Tammy Langalis and John Igneri, along with contractors for the renovation Eddie Zamora and Gene Salvatore of ER Salvatore Associates. We have decided to offer an after hours event for every exhibition going forward, so mark your calendar for the first one later this month!

RAC Classes and Workshops

Education Update

A new session of classes begins in May with weekly classes for all levels in a wide variety of mediums. Here is an action photo of students learning to paint using the “Flemish Method” with RAC Instructor Felicia Feldman.

The spring session for youth and teen students continues through late May. Registration is open for our Summer 3-Day Art Workshops for ages 6-12. (Seen here are young artists in our “Creations” class with RAC Instructor Lisa Thoren sharing their insights.) View the entire schedule at

RAC also hosts private art classes and parties for all ages in small groups in our studio. Schedule a Paint and Sip party or Open Sketch session by contacting RAC Education Director Suzy Aubrey at education@rowaytonarts.org or call 203-866-2744 (x-2).

Online Photography Classes for Adults and Teens

Thom Williams will offer one weekly class in April: Advanced Photography (beginning April 12 from 6-7:30pm). DSLR or mirrorless camera are recommended for this course. Review the entire schedule and register online at rowaytonarts.org/photography-classes.

Introduction to Abstract Painting

Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2

10:30am-3:00pm

Rachel Volpone will provide an introduction to abstract art using water-based/acrylic paint and materials in both traditional and non-traditional ways. The class will study abstract artists and their studio practices for further insight into this art form.

More Abstract Art

Sunday, April 23

9:30am-1:30pm

This one-day workshop is appropriate for prior workshop students as well as those experienced in the fundamentals of abstract art making. Rachel Volpone will focus on building a visual vocabulary through explorations of line, shape, color and mark making.

Portrait Drawing Workshop

Saturday, April 22

10:00am-1:00pm

This one day workshop will focus on rendering a finished portrait in charcoal. RAC Instructor John Grieco will share techniques in manipulating charcoal as a transparent and opaque medium, learning to observe values and proportions accurately plus exercises for using charcoal for a variety of subject matter The class will be working from a live model and is appropriate for new and seasoned portrait artists.

In the Garden 2023 Opening

Sunday, March 26

The In the Garden show is now on view through April 15 – this annual, all media exhibition features artwork by RAC Exhibiting Members with a floral or garden theme.

Winners were announced by the judge, Lee Findlay Potter: 1st Place: Erin Nazzaro of Redding for “A Peaceful Moment” (Acrylic), 2nd Place: Michael Brennecke of Westport, “Mount Jo” (Oil), 3rd Place: Marcy Juran of Westport, “Milkweed, Monarda, Beach Pea, Porcelain Berry” (Archival Pigment Print), Honorable Mention: Ronnie Gold of Stamford, “China Blossom” (Pastel), Judith Katz of Westport, “Sea Garden” (Gouache and Ink) and Ann Tetelman of South Salem for “Garlic Festival” (Watercolor/Mixed Media).
