The RAC 5 – Robert Lansden
Robert Landsen’s work continues to draw accolades at our gallery, awing visitors with its delicate intricacy. As a new Exhibiting Member at RAC, Robert won 1st Place at the highly competitive RAC Masters exhibition in September (photo here). Robert earned his MFA from Tulane University in 2005.
What medium do you work in and why?
I make drawings in either graphite, ink, or watercolor. The image and medium are dependent on each other.
Describe your artwork in 5 words.
Quietly vibrating meditative geometric abstraction.
If you could ask a piece of artwork to come to life, what would it be?
The Mona Lisa. That woman has been silent for 500 years, so I think it’s time she had her say. It has always been a favorite painting. Look closely at her hands, there’s more painting going on there than in all of Chelsea combined.
What is the most challenging part of your creative process?
My process is very time-consuming and therefore physically taxing. And it’s a solitary activity so there’s that.
Tell me about your techniques for overcoming creative blocks.
For me there is nothing like a sketchbook to overcome blocks. Just make a mark, any kind of mark until you’ve worked your way out. It’s the only thing that works for me. I had a professor in art school that required us to maintain sketchbooks and I am eternally grateful to her. Thanks Marcia Cohen. Picasso once said, “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.”
