Theme: In the dark of winter, we dream about being In the Garden.

Warm sun on our face, the scent of earth in our nose, the blush of tender shoots popping up through barren ground; these memories give us hope and comfort on dreary days and cold nights. Life comes full circle again.

Receiving: Monday, March 20 (5-7pm) and Tuesday, March 21 (12-2pm)

RAC Classes and Workshops

Education Update

A new session of classes begins the week of March 6 with a great array of weekly classes plus weekend workshops for adults. Here’s Barbara Fiorito, a student in Felicia Feldman’s Friday Oil Painting class working on a portrait.

The spring session for youth and teen students begins late March – art classes for elementary school students and a skills class for 10-14 year olds. The registration for 3-Day Art Workshops for Kids is also open for the summer (art project from last year here!) View the entire schedule at

RAC hosts private art classes and parties for all ages in small groups in our studio. Schedule a private weekly art class, a Paint and Sip party or Open Sketch session by contacting RAC Education Director Suzy Aubrey at education@rowaytonarts.org or call 203-866-2744 (x-2).

Online Photography Classes for Adults and Teens

Thom Williams will offer one weekly class in March: Intermediate Photography (beginning March 8 from 6-7:30pm). It’s open to DSLR, mirrorless and camera phone users. Review the entire schedule and register online at rowaytonarts.org/photography-classes.

Abstract Flowers

Sunday, March 12

10:30am-2:30pm

This one-day workshop is about exploring drawing, painting, and collaging flowers. RAC Instructor Lenny Moskowitz will also provide some basics of value, color, and playfulness. Previous art experience is not necessary.

Atmospheric Landscapes

Saturday, March 25

Back by popular demand, William McCarthy will inspire the imagination as he shares techniques to achieve an atmospheric style that captures the beauty and emotion of a landscape. Open to oil and acrylic painters.

Introduction to Abstract Painting

Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2

10:30am-3:00pm

Rachel Volpone will provide an introduction to abstract art using water-based/acrylic paint and materials in both traditional and non-traditional ways. The class will study abstract artists and their studio practices for further insight into this art form.

9:30am-1:30pm

This one-day workshop is appropriate for prior workshop students as well as those experienced in the fundamentals of abstract art making. Rachel Volpone will focus on building a visual vocabulary through explorations of line, shape, color and mark making.

Portrait Drawing Workshop

Saturday, April 22

10:00am-1:00pm

This one day workshop will focus on rendering a finished portrait in charcoal. RAC Instructor John Grico wilechniques will include manipulating charcoal as a transparent and opaque medium, learning to observe values and proportions accurately,and exercises for using charcoal for a variety of subject matter. The class will be working from a live model and is appropriate for new and seasoned portrait artists.

Abstraction 2023 Opening

Sunday, February 26

The annual Abstraction show is now on view through March 18 – this annual, all media exhibition features artwork by RAC Exhibiting Members with a larger degree of independence from visual references. The daughter (Mariana at right) of Almudena Fernandez Vicens (Mariana at right) accepts the Hu Lindsay Award for Best Mixed Media from family members David Lindsay (left) and Marcia Powell (second from right) with RAC Executive Director Andrea Letters as Almudena was visiting family in Spain.

Winners were announced by the judge, Hadley Powell, founder of Powell Fine Art Advisory in Boston, an art consulting and advisory service: Hu Lindsay Award for Best in Mixed Media: Almudena Fernandez Vicens of Riverside for “Untitled” (Dyptych), 1st Place: Kathy Draper of Norwalk for “Release” (Monotype), 2nd Place: Bob Sachs of Norwalk for “Magenta Spirit” (Archival Pigment Print), 3rd Place: Dana Laird of Rowayton for “Cedar Hill” (Photographic Collage) and Honorable Mention: Diane Carten Lynch of Stratford for “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” (Mixed Media), Merrilee Main of Milford for “Overboard,” Amy Schott of Wilton for “Pop Tops,” Marc Vandermeer of Riverside for“Finish Line” (Digital Painting).
