RAC Classes and Workshops
“The Flowers and Fruits of Spring”
ONLINE Watercolor Workshop
with Karen Siegel
Thursday, May 6
4:30-6pm
RAC Instructor Karen Siegel will be using the fresh colors of spring as the inspiration for paintings of flowers and fruits. Students will learn about the fundamentals of watercolor as well as how to achieve appropriate color, depth and form. Open to artists of all levels.
The fee for the class is $30. If you need supplies, RAC will deliver them to your door for an additional $35. Register online at rowaytonarts.org/workshops.
ONLINE Open Sketch
Sunday, May 16
1-3pm
OPEN SKETCH IS BACK!!! Traditional In-Studio Open Sketch Sundays are still on hold, but RAC is now offering the same great models and format in real time using Zoom on May 16 from 1 to 3 pm. Open to artists of all abilities ages 16+, info at rowaytonarts.org/events/online-open-sketch.
It’s time to register for the May/June Class Session
Spring 2 Session starts next week with a full slate of adult and children art classes both online and in studio. To review the entire schedule, visit our website at rowaytonarts.org/education.
Five adult classes will be held in the RAC studio: “Mixed Media and Collage,” “Explorations in Watercolor,” “Introduction to Drawing,” “Painting Landscapes from Photos” (student in this class pictured here) as well as a new class, “Watercolor and Gouache.” The rest will be held online via Zoom: oil painting, watercolor, figure drawing, portraiture, pastels and more.
“Creative Explorations for 6 to 10 year olds” will meet in the studio on Monday and Wednesday afternoons beginning the week of May 17 and “Mixed Media for 8 to 12 year olds” will meet there on Thursdays afternoons beginning June 3. 3-Day summer workshop registration is open as well. RAC will also arrange private art classes and parties for groups of six or less. Whether it be a private weekly art class, a Paint and Sip party or Open Sketch session, contact Education Director Suzy Aubrey at education@rowaytonarts.org or call 203-866-2744 (x-2).
This popular series with instructor Thom Williams (his photograph here) has expanded with more classes for both new and experienced photographers. Open to all camera types.
Starting next week, Thom will teach the following: Beginner Photography 1(beginning May 5 from 6-7:30pm), Beginner Photography 2 (beginning May 4 from 4-5:30pm), Advanced Photography (beginning May 4 from 6-7:30pm), Intro to Still Life & Product Photography (beginning May 6 from 6-7:30pm) and Advanced Photo Editing (beginning May 6 from 6-7:30 pm). To review the entire schedule and register online, visit rowaytonarts.org/workshops.
FREE ONLINE Artscapades Talk
“Artists in the City: From the Masters to the Modernists”
Thursday, May 26 **Save the date
7 pm
ArtScapades will look at how artists portrayed cities in their works, from the 17th realistic cityscapes to 20th century abstract metropolitan views. Included in this lecture are works by Johannes Vermeer, Camille Pissarro, John Sloan, Edward Hopper, Piet Mondrian, Georgia O’Keeffe and more.

Abstraction 2021 Opening
Sunday, April 18
This annual members show features 91 pieces of abstract art – twas a nice gathering of artists and admirers. Visit the gallery to view the show now through May 15!
The Chair for the exhibition is Mary Harold and the co-chair is Holly Hawthorn. Thanks to Lisa Wilson Grant and Marilyn Parker for help with receiving as well as Janine Brown and Michael Brennecke for hanging the show.
Winners for the following categories were announced by judge Paul Efstathiou, Director of Contemporary Art at Hollis Taggart in Chelsea, NYC and Southport, CT: Amy Schott of Wilton for “Blues,” (Hu Lindsay Memorial Award for the highest prize in Mixed Media), Best in Show: Daniel Wade Barrett of Redding for “Don’t Ask Me” (Painting), 1st Place: Elena McCoy of Rowayton for “exhale #6” (Painting), 2nd Place: Susan Lippman of Stamford for “Capri Summer” (Painting), 3rd Place:  Pam Lindberg of Darien for “Bird’s Eye View” (Collage) and Honorable Mention: Joyce Grasso of Stamford for “Light Across Antibes” (Mixed Media).

RAC Artist Selection Drop Off Day May 13
RAC’s volunteer selection committee will review artwork by local artists interested in becoming exhibiting members May 14, 2021. Artists should bring items for consideration to the gallery on Thursday, May 13 from 12 to 5 pm. The artist selection will take place on Friday, May 14 with notifications sent to accepted artists the following week. Artists should plan on picking up their artwork on Friday, May 14 from 12 to 5 pm or Saturday, May 15 from 10 am to 1 pm.

In Memoriam
Anne Schroeder Anderson
Anne Schroeder Anderson of Redding passed away peacefully on January 24, 2021. After graduating from Wellesley College with a degree in Art History, she studied with the Art Students League, NY School of Interior Design, Silvermine School of Art and RAC, among others. Anne enjoyed one-person shows at the Fairfield Library, Darien Library (two-person) and Ocean Reef Art League in Key Largo plus her paintings are in private collections around the country. Anne’s family has kindly donated her art supplies for use in the RAC studio.
