Once again, the Artists Talk@RAC proved deeply revealing. Artists exposed the sometimes costly and often frustrating battle to master techniques. It was obvious to see that there’s a lot more to the piece than meets the eye. Hidden from the observer is the blood, sweat, toil and tears of their creation. Thank you to Mindy Green for moderating the Artist Talk@RAC.

Behind the Scenes
Prince Edward Isles by Judith Lambertson
Inquiring minds were wondering about this painting, Prince Edward Isles by Judith Lambertson. “On the recommendation of Susan Fehlinger ( RAC Member and the 2017 Plein Air Festival BIS Award Winner ), I attended a Plein Air Festival last July in Canada on Prince Edward Isles (www.montaguepleinairfestival.com ). That’s where I got the inspiration for this painting. I drove up with a friend and it took us two days to get there,” Judith said.
“The organization provided the sites which can be quite difficult to find if you don’t know the area. For us, a site that was 10 minutes away would take us 40 minutes to find, we’d get so lost!”
“I painted all day and then would go back to the hotel and keep on painting because it stayed light until 9 at night. I tried to get as much done as possible. I was able to paint 16 paintings which is exactly what I wanted to do as I am preparing for a solo show at the Bowery Gallery
in Chelsea, NYC (www.bowerygallery.org). The organization was very official about making sure the painting was done in En Plein Air and would stamp your painting when you stopped painting. Some of the small paintings I will use for reference to paint larger ones, like this one. Along with the small paintings, I use photos as reference. I don’t paint from photos but it’s useful to have them to supplement as reference. When you create a larger painting from a smaller painting, the smaller painting is missing parts of the scene. So, that’s when you need the photo.”
“I started painting using watercolors. Years ago, I took a watercolor class at the Art Students League in Manhattan. Then I was introduced to oils in a portrait class at Silvermine. Now my favorite medium is oil, but I’ve been teaching classes at the Westport Senior Center and the Weston Senior Center in watercolors, gouache and acrylics.”
“I love Plein Air painting and was the former coordinator of the Fairfield County Plein Air Group. Will I be going back to the Plein Air Festival next year? Definitely, but this time I’ll fly!”
