MY NOTORIOUS LIFE ( Scribner ) is the evocative, absolutely unforgettable new novel from Kate Manning. Inspired by the true story of Ann Trow Lohman, a female physician who became one of the most controversial figures in Victorian New York City.
MY NOTORIOUS LIFE , now published in paperback, vibrantly portrays a charismatic, passionate woman who changed the lives of countless others. Set in gritty 19th century New York City.
MY NOTORIOUS LIFE is the story of Axie Muldoon, a formidable child of Irish immigrants who works her way off the brutal streets to become one of the most successful—and scandalous—women of her time.

“A daring page-turner.”
— O, The Oprah Magazine
“Unflinchingly memorable.”
— Emma Donoghue, author of Room
“Manning paints a vivid portrait of this daring yet deeply compassionatewoman who is willing to flout convention and defy the law in the name of women’s reproductive rights… it’s the details of Madame X’s private life, told in her thick Irish brogue—about the search for her long-lost siblings, her fiery relationship with her devoted husband, and her growth as a mother—that lend a human face to a this sensational figure.” —Publishers Weekly, * Starred* review

Behind the Scenes
The Explorers by Joel Flora
Inquiring minds were wondering about this piece, The Explorers by Joel Flora. Are they friends or relatives of Joel’s? “Neither. I didn’t know any of the kids,” said Joel.
“The characters are all taken from my lunch hour walks through Rockefeller Center. I used to work near there before I retired,” Joel said. T here is a small fire department museum at the Visitors Center in Rockefeller Center, so kids all got fire helmets to wear while they were shown around.”
“Basically, I was always entranced by the kids’ abilities to be in the moment and express their interest and joy as they walked or skated around on the ice rink. Each moment for them looked to me like an act of discovery, so I wanted to express that in the painting.”
“It saddens me that as we grow older, some of that immediate joy and enthusiasm fades away because we tend to suppress how we feel, lest we be judged for acting strange.”
