What started you on your creative path?
My 1st grade teacher so loved a particular picture that I drew that she sent me to all the other 1st grade teachers/classes to show them my work. When I got back she hugged me and said, “One day you’re going to be an Art Director!” I hadn’t a clue what an “art director” was, but I told everyone that it’s what I wanted to be when I grew up. I then majored in art through junior and high school. I was the first in my family to go to college and I majored in illustration at FIT and became an Art Director in NYC ad agencies.
Do you work on multiple pieces at once?
Yes, I do. Sometimes three or four at once. If can’t solve a problem in one painting, I find changing my perspective helps – my subconscious kicks in and helps me solve the 1st painting’s issue. I avoid stressing out and yet can still be painting.
What book are you reading?
Your Brain On Art, How the Arts Transform Us by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross
What inspires your artwork?
Nature. I think of myself as a plein air oil painter and have traveled from Tahiti to Croatia to paint.
What is the most challenging part of your creative process?
I KNOW what I want in my mind… Sometimes, the light goes too fast and the brush in my hand hasn’t a clue as to what my MIND wants! I wish I had a magic brush that could read my MIND!
