This is a fun class for any student who likes to doodle and draw and is interested in learning more about the art of cartooning and caricatures.  In this class, we’ll spend time learning how to recognize and draw the various facial features, body types, and movements that help define the emotions and attitudes of the characters we’ll be creating.  We’ll discuss the use of personification and exaggeration and how they can add to the stories we’re trying to tell.   We’ll also explore popular cartoon characters to help students learn how the pros approach their subjects.  Every aspect of this class is focused on fun and imagination while subtly teaching the power of astute observation.   Expect your child to follow along with the cartoon demonstrations and to segue into developing characters and stories of their own.

All supplies will be provided by RAC.

About the Instructor

Suzy Aubrey has been doodling and drawing since she was old enough to hold a pencil. She was the kid in class whose notebook margins were filled with caricatures of those around her and in her imagination. She claims that drawing while listening helped her to process the words being heard and continues with the practice to this day.

As a graduate of the University of Vermont, she was lucky enough to take a full slate of art classes along with her Business studies.  After college she continued to draw, paint, knit, collage, etc as a way to feed her soul.  She was one of the founders Columbus Magnet School’s  “Adventures in Art” program and has sold her art work at RAC and the CCNS art shows.  Today she’ll tell you she has her dream job as the Director of Education for the Rowayton Arts Center.   “It’s the perfect mix of business and art and gives me the ability to share my love of art making with the local community.”
