Explore the essential foundations of painting and drawing in this comprehensive 5-week course.

Each session introduces core artistic concepts, giving students the chance to explore both control and expressive freedom in each medium. Through guided demonstrations, hands-on practice, and thoughtful critique, participants will gain confidence and develop a solid foundation for future creative work.

Drawing Focus Areas:
• Gestural drawing to capture movement and energy
• Expressive and intentional line quality
• Line control for form, clarity, and detail
• Value studies and observational drawing techniques
• Technical skill-building for precision and accuracy
• Fundamentals of composition and visual balance

Painting Focus Areas:
• Dynamic mark making and brush handling
• Building an underpainting to establish structure
• Practical color mixing and palette organization
• Color control, relationships, and harmony
• Understanding value, chroma, and temperature
• Applying the color wheel to real painting decisions
• Techniques for painting effectively from photographs

This course is ideal for beginners as well as returning artists eager to refresh essential skills and rebuild confidence in their creative practice. Join us to reconnect with your artistic voice and expand your technical toolkit.

Suggested Supply List:  RAC will provide rulers, matte medium, retarder and palette knives.

  • Charcoal (compressed charcoal, medium (HB), and/or vine charcoal)
  • #2 Pencil
  • White eraser
  • White drawing paper, 24 sheets (14×17)
  • Newsprint (12×18)
  • Acrylic Paints (75ml each) – Cadmium Red Medium, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Mars Black, Burnt Umber and Titanium White (250ml size)
  • Brushes: 1″ Flat and a Variety of small flat, round and filberts (size 0-8) – we recommend you purchase a variety pack of brushes to start.  You can always get more if needed after week 1.
  • Palette (Masterson flat palette or palette paper)
  • Small canvases: (1) 9×9 and (3) 6×8
  • Paper Towels
  • Printed reference photos
  • Case or bag for your supplies
  • smock or apron

Studio Attire: Acrylic paint can stain clothing, please wear clothing you do not mind painting in or wear an apron. Additionally, please wear closed toed shoes.

About the Instructor

Evelyn Harvey is an artist and art instructor working with local organizations and art centers to bring creativity to the community.  She was a Professor of Visual Art, teaching Drawing I, Painting I, Designer Fundamentals, Color Theory, and Art Appreciation at Palm Beach State College.  She received her BFA in painting from Pratt institute and MFA in painting from Savannah College of Art & Design.

Below are examples of Evelyn’s personal work.  Evelyn uses painting, photography, and printmaking, when creating her work. The work explores narratives in landscape, history and folklore, as well as her own connections. There is a visual tension between reality and the surreal as she combines personal transformation, memory, symbolism, and time within the physical context of her local environment. Evelyn Harvey received a B.F.A. in painting from Pratt Institute and M.F.A. in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
