Course Description:

This is an introduction to Black and White 35mm film photography and developing/processing. Students will learn the fundamentals of working with 35mm film cameras, exposure metering, characteristics of black and white film, developing/processing and digitally scanning the negatives. This class will emphasize the merging of traditional analog processes with modern digital outcomes. Students will be able to repeat this process for themselves at home and enjoy the wonders of shooting analog in our current digital era. The development of creative visual expression is strongly encouraged.

Please note:  This class will meet four times within the course of two weeks.  Meeting dates are as follow:

  • Wed, July 15 (6-8pm)
  • Sat, July 25 (10am-1pm)
  • Sun, July 26 (10am-1pm)
  • Wed, July 29 (6-8pm)

Supply List:

  • You will need a 35mm camera for this class.  Contact RAC if you don’t have one.  We may have one for you to borrow.  Call: 203-866-2744 (X-2)
  • RAC will provide all the other supplies (i.e. film, changing bags, developing tanks with reels, and monobath development chemicals)

About the Instructor: 

Jeff Um is a seasoned photographer with over 25 years of experience. He has worked in various areas of the industry from weddings, live events, documentary/street, corporate and photojournalism. He also has a background as an Art director in the television and advertising industry often working with the medium of photography for various programming, live events and ad campaigns. Some of his clients include HBO, The Wall Street Journal, WWE, MTV, Microsoft, Jet Blue, Levis, Adidas, NFL teams and Professional boxing.
