Workshop Description:

Celebrate the beauty of summer botanicals in this creative one-day workshop.

In Gold and Silver Leaf Botanical Photography, students will learn how to give their photographs a luminous, radiant quality using a contemporary twist on traditional gilding techniques.

You will be guided through the process of applying gold and silver leaf to the back of translucent photo prints for a glowing, ethereal effect. You will explore techniques for backing the images printed on vellum with metallic leaf to create light and depth. Whether your subject is botanical, abstract, landscape, or portrait,  this method brings a fresh, elegant dimension to your imagery.

The workshop also includes a creative exploration of how to enhance cyanotypes with metallic details. You will have the opportunity to collage with gold leaf or add delicate linework using metallic pens directly onto your cyanotypes—(or ones provided by the instructor). We will also look at inspiring examples that incorporate thread, texture, and layering to elevate the surface of your prints with shimmering highlights.

All necessary materials will be provided, along with detailed instruction and a materials list so you can continue your gold and silver leaf journey at home. The instructor will be printing the images on the vellum paper.  No prior photography or art experience is required—just a willingness to explore and enjoy the process.

Join us to enhance your artistic vision and embrace the calming, mindful benefits of this luminous process.

Supply List:  All supplies for this workshop will be provided by Susanne Brandt.

About the Instructor:

Susanne Brandt is an artist who is known for her fine art photography. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University as well as a masters degree in Art Education. Susanne is currently the head art teacher at Wilton High School where she has taught photography for many years. She also teaches various workshops focusing on unique printing and photographic  techniques.  Helping others explore new areas of photography remains her primary joy.  Susanne has been exhibiting her work in group and solo exhibitions in CT & NYC for over 30 years. Her alternative photographic processes include printing onto fine art paper, fabric, metal, canvas and glass. Many of the photographs
are then enhanced utilizing paints and artisanal inks. Susanne works primarily with an infrared converted SLR camera. She enjoys the medium because infrared photography has a dream-like surreal quality making the images glow with a shimmering aura. Her work seeks to capture a compelling moment in time found in cityscapes, street scenes and nature. Her goal is to create “visual meditations” in her images.
