Workshop Description:
Experience the fusion of art, nature and light in our immersive workshop “Capturing Nature in a New Light”. In this hands-on session, you will explore the historic processes of Lumen printing and Phytograms – alternative photographic techniques known for producing ethereal images in rich ochres and golden tones using fresh flowers, leaves, feathers, and other botanical elements.
You will learn how to create both traditional Lumen prints and Phytograms. For Lumens, a camera-less photographic method, we will use traditional darkroom paper and UV light to reveal the delicate impressions of natural forms. For Phytograms, you will be guided step-by step through preparing the solution, coating your materials, arranging compositions, exposing them to UV light, and fixing your final images.
This workshop is not only about creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind prints – it offers a meditative, sensory experience that invites you to slow down, connect with nature, and find calm through creative expressions.
All necessary materials will be provided, along with detailed instructions and a materials list to continue your Lumen and Phytogram journey at home. No prior photography or art experience is required—just an eagerness to explore and enjoy the process. Join us to discover the quiet magic of working with nature and light and embrace the calming benefits of creating these prints.
Supply List: All supplies for this workshop will be provided by Susanne Brandt.
About the Instructor:
Susanne Brandt is an artist and arts educator who lives and works between CT and coastal
Maine, drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of the New England landscape. Susanne
holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University as well as a double master’s degree in
Art Education.
Her current body of work explores the deep connection between art and nature, focusing on
abstract botanicals that reflect elements of mysticism. Susanne creates painterly, ethereal
images that invite quiet, internal dialogue with the natural world. Her cyanotypes and
phytograms often incorporate ocean water, seaweed and sand, reflecting her commitment to
raising awareness about the urgent need to protect our marine life and oceans. She also
often enhances her photographs with paint, inks, gold leaf, and hand-drawn elements,
transforming her images into mixed-media artworks.
Susanne’s career spans 24 years of teaching art at Wilton High School, where she served as
the head art teacher for many years. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and
inspiring students of all ages to explore their creativity and connect more deeply with the
environment through art. In her workshops, she incorporates elements of meditation and
mindfulness, encouraging students to slow down and find relaxation through the creative
process.
Susanne has been exhibiting her work in group and solo exhibitions in CT & New York City
for over 30 years.
