COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This foundational course in Photography is appropriate for beginner and intermediate level photographers as well as artists yearning to learn more about the components of a strong composition and the power of subject matter. We’ll be covering the technical aspects of the camera (i.e. aperture and f-stop, lenses, lighting and exposure, etc) as well as the laws and ethics behind street photography, and the basics of what makes a good photograph The development of creative visual expression will be strongly encouraged.
SUPPLY LIST:
- A properly functioning camera of any kind, digital or film
- Access to a printer (suggested, but not imperative)
- Phone cameras are acceptable but not the most ideal
GOAL OF COURSE: To increase our photography skills through the art of street photography and develop an ongoing practice of documenting the world around us.
- Understanding and identifying elements of an impactful photograph
- Knowing the law of photographing in public and ethical approaches
- Learning the practical and technical skills of street photography
- Practicing street photography and discussing the results and experiences
COURSE BREAKDOWN – 3 DAYS TOTAL
DAY 1, Wednesday, Oct 14 (6-7:30pm) – RAC Studio
- Introduction of course and expectations
- Defining street photography and acknowledging personal goals
- Discuss laws, ethics and dealing with the public
- Discussing pictorial story, photography style and emotional impact
- General Q & A allowing students to voice concerns and inspiration
DAY 2, Saturday, Oct 17 (2-5pm) – On location
- Guided photowalk at a specified location
- Finding Subjects and inspiration
- Camera basics and technical fundamentals
- Understanding lighting and exposure
- Street portraiture and practicing engagement with strangers
- Candid photography and the relationship of light, composition and the “moment”
- At the end of class, each student will be assigned to take photos on their own time and email 3 photos to the instructor. Each set will include a candid photo with people, street portrait and an “urban landscape”.
DAY 3, Wednesday, Oct 21 (6-7:30pm) – RAC Gallery
- Students show and present their 3 photos on a monitor and/or printed copies
- The class will collectively reflect and discuss each photo
- General Q&A
- Developing a daily practice of documenting with a camera as well as archiving and organizing their work.
About the Instructor:
Jeff Um is a seasoned photographer with over 25 years of experience. He has worked in various areas of the industry from weddings, live events, documentary/street, corporate and photojournalism. He also has a background as an Art director in the television and advertising industry often working with the medium of photography for various programming, live events and ad campaigns. Some of his clients include HBO, The Wall Street Journal, WWE, MTV, Microsoft, Jet Blue, Levis, Adidas, NFL teams and Professional boxing.
