Describe your artwork in 5 words
THEMATIC, OTHERWORLDLY, LAYERED, DEEP, EVOCATIVE
What medium do your work in and why?
Being a curious multi-media artist, I paint, collage, print, photograph, work with salvaged wood. When I paint, I use my stash of papers to create a rich, information-laden work reflective of my inner world. With wood, I play until a story or totem presents itself. Collage is pure jazz, a musical puzzle. Art makes me feel at home in the world. A variety of media keeps me curious and fresh.
What is your favorite tool in creating art?
There are two: OBSERVATION AND IMAGINATION
From an early age, Imagination designed fantastical worlds and beings. To this day, I dig into Imagination to surface images not seen before, making the invisible visible. However, a balanced relationship with Observation: looking closely at nature, light and shadow, people’s uniqueness, the shape of things, is essential so that the unbelievable is believable.
What inspires your artwork?
MUSINGS ON LIFE & A SEARCH FOR ESSENCE
For over 40 years, people, places and concepts have been my subjects. I began as a portrait/fine artist, painting with Charles Ray and Pamela Dulong Williams. I studied abstraction with recently deceased mentor, Constance Kiermaier. Memory of a place or a concept like childhood can embed itself so strongly in my psyche that I must see what it looks like. I aim to unearth an energetic presence, done best through art.
How do I know when I have finished a piece of art?
BOXES ARE CHECKED: A BALANCE OF VARIETY & UNITY, solid composition, choices feel right, I’ve said enough, hopefully not too much! Painting over old paintings often creates magical, symbiotic relationships. Being process-oriented, I take progress photos showing me that I had many “finished” pieces along the way! One piece is actually a culmination of many wonderful forays into the unknown.
