This course explores the subtle details of the human body through technical illustrations of anatomy as well as exercises to practice proportions.  This class will be taught online using Zoom, with weekly instructional videos and handouts. Students will have the ability to work at their own pace during the week with guidance from the instructional videos and handouts that Jacobina will distribute weekly.  Students will meet weekly on Zoom to discuss progress,  technique and concepts. This class will prepare you for any life drawing classes you take in the future.

Week 1:  The Line
Learn to draw something by letting your eyes really connect with the subject and allowing your hand to follow instructions without looking at your paper. This powerful exercise will enable you to eliminate your belief system about your perception of art.  How to properly stand behind an easel and use your position to verify your drawing and compare it with the model. You need a small hand held mirror, charcoal and newsprint clipped to a piece of board, plus an easel.

Week 2:  The Viewfinder
Use your creativity to deal with this tool that will help you with perspective, proportions and composition. If this is new for you I would suggest you take the time to get the best of it. The outline can be wobbly but the relationships between the various objects has to be clear. Draw your hand and your foot accurately as instructed in the demonstration.

Week 3: Proportions
Stand behind your easel as instructed before. If you cannot stand, get a chair on wheels so you can turn around and position yourself comfortably. You need to be able to see the subject at the same time as your drawing in a small handheld mirror. This is the only way you will practice fresh eyes when there is not a professional teacher around.

Week 4:   Hands and feet
Sitting at a table copy the drawings I made for you of the hands and feet. Ask somebody to keep their hands still for a while. Study their feet. Five drawings in total, very well executed. Sharpen your pencil, get high quality drawing paper and study the bones, muscles and skin. Practice hatching and cross hatching.

Week 5:  Arms and legs
Sitting at a table, copy the drawings I made for you of hands and feet.  Using yourself and others as live models, complete give drawings in total, very well executed. Sharpen your pencil, get high quality drawing paper and study the bones, muscles and skin. Practice hatching and cross hatching.

Week 6: The torso

Sharpen your pencil, get high quality drawing paper and study the bones, muscles and skin. Practice hatching and cross hatching. Create a mood by making one very dark and one very light.

I would highly recommend Jacobina’s On-line Drawing classes. I had a very satisfying and rewarding experience. She is very easy to work with and I learned so much in such a short period of time, online from Boston when we were in lock-down mode. Jacobina gives clear and detailed instructions for each lesson, actually drawing the object in front of you — almost like a practice run! The lessons build on one-another so you see progress week after week. Carol Weintraub, Banker in Boston

When I took figure drawing classes from the Ringling school for Art and Design, Jacobina was my patient teacher. I had a desire to tap into the vast knowledge she showed me and when she offered the coaching I didn’t hesitate. We both committed to three months of drawing. I thought there was not much else to learn after three months, but boy, was I wrong. We have been working for almost a year and it feels like I never want to stop discovering various drawing techniques.  Kathy

I’m a marine biologist who spends time at the intersection of science and policy. I didn’t think I could draw or be creative. On a whim, I signed up for Jacobina’s class and learned so much about myself and the creative process. Her instruction helped me reconnect and awaken my right brain in ways I knew existed, but had no idea how to access. Her classes are paced perfectly. As a super busy person, I didn’t think I’d have time, but I did. As a non-artist, I was afraid of being judged, but I was supported and valued. I learned that the beauty in art is having no judgement, there is a flow, and a sense of just being. I signed up to learn how to draw, but I ended up learning how to be kind to myself, how to connect to hidden parts of my brain, and how to find simple joy with a pencil and paper. Laura Engleby, Marine Biologist
