Instructor's website

Fee: $195

This class is geared toward students who are familiar with oil painting, and want to strengthen their skills.

Specifically tailored towards the seasoned painter, we will cover different techniques in oil painting, such as ébauche, grisaille, bistre, verdaccio, and alla prima. We will also cover specific color palettes, composition theory, concept, and an exploration of materials and techniques that will ensure the longevity of your artwork.

Each student will work on their individual painting throughout the semester.  Three demonstrations will be announced at the onset of the second class. Students have the option of following along in real time with the instructor to better understand a new concept or technique.

Note that this class is the same class that is offered from 12-2:30pm on Fridays.  Students are welcome to register for both classes if interested in having 5.5 hrs of painting with Felicia.

Suggested Supply list

For everyone’s health and safety, Felicia recommends students use water mixable oil paints.  However, if a student is insistent on using the traditional paints, it’s totally fine.

  • Water mixable oil paints OR oil paints in the following colors: cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow medium, ultramarine blue, ivory black, and titanium white. Optional colors are viridian, yellow ochre, raw umber and burnt sienna.
  • An assortment of brushes small and medium in size — filbert and round, synthetic and hog bristle
  • Small palette knife
  • Palette paper (at least 9″ x 12″)
  • Canvas paper or canvas boards, at least 9″ x 12″, or if preferred – a stretched canvas or prepared artists panel
  • Paper towels
  • 2 small glass jars with lids (I use whatever glass food jars I have in the kitchen)
  • IF PAINTING WITH WATER MIXABLE OILS: water mixable linseed or safflower oil (recommend Winsor & Newton Artisan brand)
  • IF PAINTING IN TRADITIONAL OILS:  odorless mineral spirits and refined linseed oil (small is fine for the oil, recommend a larger size for the mineral spirits)
