Workshop Description:

In this class, you will learn how to create  “Wet Cyanotype Prints” with a UV light source. The cyanotype process creates prints with a rich blue color and brilliant white highlights. Wet cyanotypes bring in various color tones into the print by adding items like spices, salt and vinegar to your print while it is developing. The chemical reactions create very interesting patterns and effects on your print.

We will cover all the steps required to create both traditional cyanotypes as well as Wet Cyanotypes. This includes preparation of the cyanotype solution, preparation of vinegar solutions, coating the paper, adding items like spices and salts to the print, exposing the print to light and finally fixing the image. You will create your own cyanotypes on hot press watercolor paper from a variety of materials found in nature. The focus of the workshop will be on creating wet cyanotypes.

Students will be shown how the Cyanotype process can create prints on a variety of surfaces such as Japanese papers, translucent papers, silk, cotton, glass, polished metal as well as ceramic surfaces.

Creating cyanotypes yield unique one-of-a-kind art pieces and provide opportunities to let go while collaborating with nature.

All materials for the workshop will be provided. Detailed instructions and a material list will also be provided so you can continue with the process at home. No prior photography or art experience is necessary. Just a desire to have fun and experiment with the Cyanotype process.  Come join us and enhance your artistic vision!

Supply List:  All supplies for this workshop will be provided by RAC.

Susanne Brandt is an artist who is known for her fine art photography. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Alfred University as well as a masters degree in Art Education. Susanne is currently the head art teacher at Wilton High School where she has taught photography for many years. She also teaches various workshops focusing on unique printing and photographic  techniques.  Helping others explore new areas of photography remains her primary joy.  Susanne has been exhibiting her work in group and solo exhibitions in CT & NYC for over 30 years. Her alternative photographic processes include printing onto fine art paper, fabric, metal, canvas and glass. Many of the photographs
are then enhanced utilizing paints and artisanal inks. Susanne works primarily with an infrared converted SLR camera. She enjoys the medium because infrared photography has a dream-like surreal quality making the images glow with a shimmering aura. Her work seeks to capture a compelling moment in time found in cityscapes, street scenes and nature. Her goal is to create “visual meditations” in her images.
