RAC Gallery Hours

Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 12-5pm, Saturday 10am-1pm and Sunday (Summer Only) 10am-1pm.

Closed on Monday and one week prior to openings.

Press Release: “Holiday Gift Show” 2018

The holiday countdown begins and wise shoppers know just where to go to get a head start on shopping – the Rowayton Arts Center. Opening day is Friday, November 23. Hours for the opening weekend (11/23- 11/26): Friday, Saturday, Monday (10am-5pm), Sunday* (Noon-7pm)

The Holiday Gift Show is a favorite Rowayton tradition. The art center’s gallery is filled with the work of the region’s best artisans. You’ll find one of a kind, creative presents for everyone on your list. Hours (November 27 to December 24) are: Tuesday through Friday (Noon-5pm), Saturday (10am – 5pm), Sunday (Noon-5pm). Closed Mondays – except the Monday before Christmas. Closed Thanksgiving. *Open until 7pm for the “Light Up Rowayton” festivities on Sunday, November 25 – an evening you don’t want to miss!                                                                                

While you’re there, have a look at the sensational 6” x6’’ panels painted, embellished and creatively designed by RAC artists. Priced at $45, these original works of art won’t last long. Proceeds from the Holiday Gift Show are used to support the Art Center and its educational outreach projects.

For almost 60 years, the Rowayton Arts Center has been a cultural gem. It is an exceptional gallery where regional artists can exhibit and sell their art, as well as being a wonderful venue for art workshops and classes. The Art School offers classes to children and adults at all levels. The RAC Gallery and Art School are located on the bank of the scenic Five Mile River in Rowayton, CT at 145 Rowayton Avenue.

Proceeds from your sensational 6 x 6s will go to RAC’s fund for a new floor.
I f you have been in a show at RAC (Exhibiting Member or Juried-in Artist ), you are invited to create an original, sensational 6″ x 6″ to help RAC g et a new floor! For this year’s Holiday Gift Show, RAC would like artists to come up with original designs on 6″ x 6″ wood panels. RAC provides the panels and artists donate their design and talent. Transform a block into a thing of beauty for RAC to sell at the Holiday Gift Show. Come in and pick-up a blank panel and return it with your art by Friday, November 16
Make sure all paint is dry and any collages, mixed media, or photos are permanently bonded. No need for wiring or a holiday theme – just make it beautiful!
Your original work of art, priced at $45, will help RAC raise the funds to get a much needed new floor for our gallery.

Press Release: “Autumn Juried Show” Winners 2018

The Rowayton Arts Center was buzzing on Sunday, September 30th for the Opening Reception of the Autumn Juried Show, which featured art in all media. Judge Katerina Lanfranco had selected 90 works of art from the 284 submissions to be included in this show. Artists from Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York all have works featured in this show.

Ms. Lanfranco, who hails from New York City, directed the hanging of the art in the gallery, and attended the Opening as well, speaking with the artists about what had drawn her to their piece.

Co-chairs of this exhibition, Richard Koleszar and Barbara Murphy handed out the awards. The winners:

Press Release: New Board Member October 2018

The Rowayton Arts Center is pleased to announce the addition of Katie Burke to its Board of Directors.

Katie is one of the country’s leading political and corporate communications strategists with over twenty years of experience at the highest levels of government and business. She is currently Senior Strategist and Global Chief of Staff at Edelman, the world’s largest communications firm, where she also sits on the Executive Committee.

She is a member of the Board of Trustees for Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, where she also serves on the Board of Visitors for the School of Communication and chairs the Development Committee.

Katie lives in Rowayton with her husband and six year-old daughter.

RAC is delighted to have Katie on board and looks forward to benefiting from her extensive communications and strategy expertise.

Press Release: “Photography & Sculpture” and “Robert Baxter Solo Show” 2018

The upcoming Photography and Sculpture Exhibition at the Rowayton Arts Center features the work of RAC Exhibiting Members who transform their seen and imagined worlds into compelling works of art.

The show opens on September 2nd and will be on view through September 23rd. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 11 am to 5 pm and Saturday, 11 am to 2 pm.

The Opening Reception is Sunday, September 9th, from 4-6 PM.

The Exhibition Chairs are Lisa Laible and Laure Dunn. The Exhibition Judge is Artist Joan Fitzsimmons who says, “My photographs examine the tenuous, ebbing boundaries between reality and perception.”

Running concurrently with the Photography and Sculpture Exhibition will be a Solo Show by Robert Baxter, a renowned painter, educator and illustrator in the Portside Gallery. Baxter’s work has been commissioned by the U.S Department of the Interior and is featured in many private collections.

For almost 60 years, the Rowayton Arts Center has been a cultural landmark in Norwalk. In the gallery–located at 145 Rowayton Avenue, Rowayton, CT–regional artists can exhibit and sell their work. Robert Baxter has been part of the New York area art community for many years. Educated at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, Robert came back east and worked in New York as an illustrator. He worked for advertising agencies and magazines such as Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home Journal and  Reader’s Digest* .
Robert holds a AB from Miami University, is a USAF veteran and a member of the American Watercolor Society. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Art and is represented by Dabbert Gallery in Sarasota, Florida.

Press Release: “Brushwork” Winners 2018

Winners of the Brushwork 2018 Exhibit were announced at the Rowayton Arts Center’s opening reception by Exhibition Chair Judith Orseck Katz (Westport) and Co-Chair Lilly Langostky (Rowayton).

Juror Elizabeth Hasegawa Agresta commented, “Winners were chosen in large part based on the quality of the brushwork. An excellent criterion, because it is within the brush strokes that one can see, in all clarity, the artist’s level of experience, as well as confidence in the moment.”

Press Release: “Brushwork” 2018

The upcoming exhibition, Brushwork, at the Rowayton Arts Center features the work by RAC Exhibiting Members created with traditional brush strokes – but not always with traditional results. Work is done in watercolors, acrylics and oils. Brushwork opens Sunday, August 5 with an opening reception from 4 to 6pm. Receptions are free and open to the public. Expect to see a full range of styles from realism to abstract. Visitors will have the chance to meet the artists at the reception and view (and perhaps purchase) their art. Refreshments are served.

The Exhibition Chair is Judith Katz (Westport) and Co-chair is Lilly Langotsky (New York City). The Exhibition Judge is Artist Elizabeth Agresta of Cos Cob Studioworks. Press Release: “Marine & Coastal” Winners 2018

July 1, 2018….Winners of the Marine & Coastal Exhibit were announced at the Rowayton Arts Center’s opening reception today. Susan Fehlinger (Bridgeport) won Best in Show for her oil painting, Beach Cottage. Award winning artist and instructor Will McCarthy (Hamden, CT) selected the award winners from almost 80 entries.

Of the exhibition, Will McCarthy said, “This is my second time jurying this very same show, and each time I am struck with the diversity and breath of creation that awaits me every time I enter this space.”

Exhibition Chair was Sandy Mills (Norwalk) and Co-chair was Elaine Pagano (Rowayton). The exhibition will be on view until Sunday, July 29. Gallery hours are: Tues – Fri (11am-5pm) and Sat, Sun (11am-2pm).

Press Release: “Marine & Coastal” 2018

The Marine and Coastal exhibition opens July 1 at the Rowayton Arts Center. This show features artwork (all by RAC Exhibiting Members) with a marine and coastal theme and includes paintings, drawings, photographs and sculpture. The opening reception is Sunday, July 1 (4-6pm) and is free and open to the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet artists and view (and purchase) their art. The Chair is Sandy Mills (Norwalk) and Co-chair is Elaine Pagano (Rowayton). The Judge is art instructor and award winning artist Will McCarthy. The exhibit will be on view until Sunday, July 29.

Press Release: “Focus Under Forty” and “Paint Rowayton” Winners 2018

Joseph Dermody (Greenwich) wins Best in Show – a second time in a row – at the Rowayton Arts Center! At Sunday’s opening reception for Focus Under Forty, Joseph Dermody was awarded the top honor for his acrylic painting, “Vortex.” Eleanor Flatow, an independent art consultant and former co-director of the Carriage Barn Arts Center, selected 16 winners from over 200 entries. Focus Under Forty was an Open Call for artists ages 16 through 39 with no restrictions for media or theme. Exhibition Chair is Board Member Joanna Bridges (Darien) and Co-Chair Megan Garbe (Norwalk).
In the Portside Gallery, the Plein Air exhibition – Paint Rowayton runs concurrently with Focus Under Forty. Exhibition Chairs are Eunice Roy and Yuko Ike. NCC Adjunct Professor and Exhibition Judge, Steve DiGiovanni, selected the oil painting by Lesley Concannon (Wilton) Best in Show. Both exhibitions will be in the gallery until Sunday, June 24. Press Release: “Author Talk & Wine Tasting” 2018

Author Talk & Wine Tasting at the Rowayton Arts Center on Monday, June 18 (7-8pm): Georgia Hunter will discuss her award winning debut novel, We Were the Lucky Ones. This NY TIMES BESTSELLER was inspired by the true story of Hunter’s grandfather and his family, and their herculean efforts to survive the Holocaust. The book has received rave reviews from critics and readers, and has been on the NY Times Paperback Best Seller list for over 4 months. Following the discussion, Hunter will sign books, which will be available for purchase.
The evening will feature a light fare and a Drink the Book-themed Wine Tasting (6-7pm) with Zoe Shyn, Certified Sommelier, Wine Consultant and Educator. Shyn has hand-selected a collection of little known wines from Eastern Europe, each relevant to the storyline of We Were the Lucky Ones. Doors will stay open until 9pm.

Press Release: New Executive Director Andrea Letters May 2018

Andrea Letters has been appointed Executive Director of the Rowayton Arts Center. Andrea, a native of Long Island, has lived in Rowayton with her husband, and two sons for the last 12 years. She is a photographer and has studied Art, Art History and English at her alma mater, University of California in Santa Barbara.

Her professional career includes two stints as Associate Art Director for Gourmet Magazine (Condé Nast) and Metropolitan Home Magazine (Hachette-Filipacchi). Andrea and her husband, Cameron, have been very active in Rowayton. One event in particular (that Cameron co-founded) is Rowayton’s Thanksgiving Turkey Trot.

Andrea said of her appointment, “I’m really looking forward to joining the great team already in place at RAC. I have a lot of ideas to help RAC grow and expand its outreach in the community. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work!” Hope you will drop by and welcome Andrea to the Arts Center.

Catch the up-and-coming trailblazers in the next art exhibition, “Focus Under Forty,” opening at the Rowayton Arts Center on Sunday, June 10.  This exhibition, exclusively for artists ages 16-39, shines the spotlight on artists you should get to know. This show of regional young talent allowed artists to freely express themselves without restrictions on theme or media.

Best in Show is awarded a prize of $250.  The Exhibit Chair is Joanna Bridges and Co-Chair is Megan Garbe. The Judge, Eleanor Flatow, is an independent art consultant and former co-director of the Carriage Barn Arts Center.

Another exhibition, also opening on Sunday, June 10, is “Paint Rowayton.” This show features the work of Plein Air painters who painted scenes of picturesque Rowayton during the spring (May 5 – June 8). So if you have seen artists with easels set up around Rowayton, now you know why.

Rowayton’s Memorial Day celebration is on Sunday, May 27. Look for Junior Members in the parade on the RAC float and then join in the activities sponsored by the Arts Center in Pinkney Park after the parade. Joseph Dermody of Greenwich wins Best in Show in the exhibition with “Community Sponsored Awards,” at the Rowayton Arts Center for his mixed media piece, “1995.”
More than two-dozen winners were selected out of 107 entries. Award winners received cash awards and prizes (almost $4000) donated by friends and local businesses.

The art, submitted by RAC Exhibiting Members, displays a full range of styles and mediums from abstraction to realism. The one exhibition that takes a whole village, Community Sponsored Awards, will open at the Rowayton Arts Center on Sunday, May 6. This exhibition has a prize in every category thanks to the generosity of the community. Dozens of winners will be selected and thousands of dollars (donated by friends and local businesses) will be awarded. The art, submitted by RAC Exhibiting Members, is created without limitations in media or theme. You can expect to see a full range of styles from abstraction to realism. Press Release: “Abstraction” Winners 2018

The award winners of the Abstraction Exhibition were announced at the opening reception on Sunday at the Rowayton Arts Center. Robert Sachs (Norwalk) won Best in Show for his photo, Ice Skating Rockefeller Center #1 and Bevi Bullwinkel (Fairfield) won 1st Place, Mixed Media and the Hu Lindsay Memorial Award for her painting, Dancing. The Hu Lindsay Memorial Award was presented by Hu Lindsay’s widow, Marcia Powell, and grandson, Cooper Lindsay, both of Norwalk. Hu Lindsay, longtime resident of Norwalk was an artist and past RAC Board President.
The exhibition is on view until Saturday, April 28. Chairs of the exhibition are Heide Follin and Melissa Orme. The judge, Cabell Molina, is an artist and owner of SONO’s Love Art Gallery.

Press Release: “Abstraction” 2018

Shake off the winter blahs with the upcoming exhibition, Abstraction, loaded with splashes of life-affirming color. Opening reception is Sunday, April 8 (4-6pm) at the Rowayton Arts Center. This free form style of swirling shapes and bold lines completely breaks away from traditional art. The exhibition judge is Artist and LOVE ART Gallery Owner Cabell Molina. The exhibition chair is Heide Follin and co-chair is Melissa Orme. The exhibition features art in any media, on any theme. The winner of Best in Show will be awarded the Hu Lindsay Memorial Award ($250).  Hu Lindsay, an artist and past president of the Rowayton Arts Center was a longtime resident of Norwalk.  The exhibit will be on view in the gallery until Saturday, April 28.

Norwalker Wins Spring Juried Art Show

March 3, 2018… Michael O’Hara of Norwalk is the winner of the Best In Show award (and cash prize of $250) for his photo, Attention Deficit. His piece was one of over 80 pieces accepted in the exhibition. The exhibition was an open call to artists resulting in a stunning 243 submissions. The juror, Kimberly Henrikson is Interim Executive Director of the Center for Contemporary Printmaking (Norwalk). Opening reception is Sunday, March 4 (4-6pm).

The exhibition is up from March 4 to March 31. The opening reception is Sunday, March 4 (4-6pm) and is free and open to the public.

This show is open theme and open media. There is a $250 cash award for Best in Show. Exhibition Chairs are Andrea Letters and Kathleen Weinstock. The juror, Kimberly Henrikson, is currently Interim Executive Director of the Center for Contemporary Printmaking.

Press Release: “Beyond Brushwork” Winners 2018

Winners from the exhibition,“Beyond Brushwork,” were announced at the Rowayton Arts Center on Sunday. Amy Schott (Wilton) won Best in Show as well as the Gale Parsons Memorial Award. Her piece, “Twisted in Color,” was created from tiny pieces of paper from packaging materials.

The judge, Laura G. Einstein, Principal of LGE Fine Art Consulting. said of her piece, “Without a doubt, Amy Schott’s masterful use of thin colorful strips creates a composition that decisively communicates what it means to be beyond brushwork.”Commenting on the entire exhibition, Ms. Einstein added,“I was struck by the diversity of technique, imagery and displays of talent.”Categories in the show are digital art, drawings, mixed media, paper cuts, pastels and prints. Exhibition Requirements

Artist Submission Requirements

  • Work must have been completed in the last three years and not previously exhibited
    at RAC. No giclées, other than for photography. No renderings or copies of other
    artist’s work. Works generated by AI are not acceptable.
  • Two-dimensional work may not exceed 40” in height or length, including frame.
  • Canvases less than 1.25 inches deep must be framed. Museum edge canvases (1.25”
    or deeper) need not be framed but must have clean edges with no visible staples.
  • Work on board less than 1.25” need not be framed. Edges must be clean or painted.
  • Work on metal need not be framed. Metal must be wired for hanging.
  • All work, both framed and unframed must be dry, ready to hang, eye hooks recessed
    so they do not protrude out the back of the frame, with braided wire.
  • No sawtooth hangers.
  • For plexi-mounted art and work on metal, two secure picture hangers with wire
    attached to the back-frame structure are required. Alternatively, a securely attached
    and centered D-ring is acceptable on smaller pieces.
  • Three-dimensional art may not exceed 3’ x 3’. The artist must provide an appropriate
    base and be available to assist with the installation.
  • No renderings or copies of other artist’s work. No photographs of the artwork of
    others unless additional elements are included.
  • Work applied to an unusual surface (such as handmade paper) or collaged elements
    that are combined to create a substrate will be considered to be within the category
    of the medium applied to the surface without regard to the surface itself. For
    instance, watercolor applied to handmade paper shall be considered watercolor,
    not mixed media.

RAC Policies

  • All work must be hand delivered to the Rowayton Arts Center during Exhibition Receiving hours. Artwork that is mailed in will not be accepted to the show.
  • RAC will collect a commission of 30% on all sales ONCE DELIVERED TO THE RAC GALLERY FOR MEMBER SHOWS AND ONCE SUBMITTED IN OPEN JURIED SHOWS. THIS RULE APPLIES EVEN IF THE PIECE SELLS VIA PRIVATE CONTACT, SOCIAL MEDIA OR AN ARTIST’S WEBSITE.
  • Photographs of artwork may be used for publicity for the exhibitions. Please take a photo of your work, before it is under glass, to ensure that the photo does justice to your work. It is extremely hard to take good photos of work in gallery conditions, particularly when it is under glass. You retain all rights to

The next exhibition, “Beyond Brushwork,” opens at the Rowayton Arts Center on Sunday, February 4 (4-6pm). Exhibiting Members prove that one does not always need a paintbrush or a camera to make beautiful art. In this show, you will see digital art, drawings, mixed media, paper cuts, pastels and prints. The Gale Parsons Memorial Award will be presented to the winner in the category of Mixed Media. Also opening on Sunday in the Portside Gallery is the solo show of award winning artist, Pierre Lahaussois. Both exhibitions will be on view until Saturday, February 24.
The exhibit chair is Diane Weeks and co-chair is Britt Bair. The exhibition judge is Laura G. Einstein, whose career has included curating, lecturing and museum work at Yale University Art Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the IBM Gallery of Science and the Glass House in New Canaan. From 2014-2017, Ms. Einstein was Executive Director of the Center of Contemporary Printmaking. Currently she is Principal of LGE Fine Art Consulting.
Also on Sunday, February 4 (2-4pm) is an art demonstration by Patti Mollica from the paint manufacturer Golden Paints. Patti will demonstrate the latest techniques and offer tips for painting with acrylics. Join us afterwards for the opening reception in the gallery. Press Release: January 2018 Events

Rowayton Arts Center kicks off the New Year with “From the RAC Studio,” a special exhibit of work by RAC students and instructors (chaired by Suzy Aubrey, Education Director). Mark your calendar: The show opens on Sunday, January 14 (4-6pm). This exhibit is all-media, open-themed, and is a wonderful showcase of RAC talent. If you took a class in 2017, you are eligible to enter. Art will be available for purchase.

Art submissions are Monday, January 8 (4-7pm) and Tuesday January 9 (11am-2pm). The opening reception on Sunday, January 14 is free and open to the public. Also on Sunday is a free art demonstration with Anda Styler (2-4pm). Come and be inspired to discover your genius at a class at RAC.

The winter session of classes begins on January 3. Interested in trying to achieve Exhibiting Member status? Drop off art for the review committee on January 18. Check the website for the latest information.

Press Release: “Holiday Gift Show” 2017

The countdown to the holidays begins: Only 47 days until Christmas and 34 days until Hanukkah! You can get a jump start on holiday shopping at the Holiday Gift Show at the Rowayton Arts Center. Opening weekend is Saturday, November 18 through Monday November 20 (10am-5pm).
The Holiday Gift Show is a Rowayton tradition. Under the creative eye of award winning artist Pam Abear, the RAC Art Gallery transforms into a magical winter wonderland. It’s filled with the work of the best artisans in the region. You’ll find original one-of-a-kind  presents for everyone on your list. Opening weekend hours are Saturday through Monday, November 18-20 (10:00am-5:00pm). Regular hours from November 21 to December 24 are: Sunday (Noon-5pm), Tuesday through Friday (Noon-5pm), Saturday (10am–5pm). Closed Mondays – except the Monday (November 20) before Christmas. Closes on December 24 at 2pm.

As part of the Rowayton holiday festivities on Sunday evening, Novemeber 26, RAC will be roasting chestnuts. The gallery will be open until 7pm. This is one evening in the village you don’t want to miss!

When you are in the gallery, have a look at Dana Goodfellow’s painting, “Island Lighthouse.” Mrs. Goodfellow, award winning painter and instructor, has generously donated her painting (Value: $3200) to the RAC raffle. Her work can be found in private collections throughout the US and has been featured in several local publications. Proceeds from the raffle and Holiday Gift Show are used to support the Art Center and its educational outreach projects.

The award winners of the Photography & Sculpture Exhibition were announced at Sunday’s reception at the Rowayton Arts Center. Richard Ventre of Norwalk won Best in Show with his photomontage of Michelle/Bach in Mass in B Minor. The Exhibit chairs were Barbara Murphy and Azar Behjati.

Judge David Pressler said of the show, “This exhibition was a delight to the eye! With such variety and quality of work, it provides the viewer with ongoing visual stimulation as one walks through the gallery. Each encountered piece is a view into another photographer’s or sculptor’s way of experiencing their world! Press Release: “Photography & Sculpture” 2017

Photography and sculpture take center stage in September at the Rowayton Arts Center. Award winning photographer, and Berkeley, MIT grad, Gennadiy Goldenshteyn of Manchester, CT has his solo show in the Portside Gallery. His work features images from around the world.

In the main gallery, RAC members exhibit their photography and sculpture in black and white and living color. Exhibit chairs are Barbara Murphy and Amaz Behjari.   The Exhibition Judge is Connecticut artist, photographer, world traveler and designer David Pressler.

Both exhibits open Sunday, September 3, but the opening reception is Sunday, September 10 (2-4pm for the Solo Show and 4-6pm for the Main Gallery), delayed due to the Labor Day holiday; it is free and open to the public. Also free and open to the public is Hands-on Encaustics Demonstration with art instructor Leslie Giuliani (2-4pm).

Press Release: “Brushwork” Winners 2017

August 7, 2017….Winners of the Brushwork Exhibition were announced at the Rowayton Arts Center’s opening reception on Sunday. Westport artist Wendy DeMaiorebus Pieper won Best in Show for her watercolor, “Dapper.”

Artist, Art Educator and Designer Nancy McTague Stock selected the winners from almost 80 entries. Of the exhibit, Ms. Stock said, “Each painting in this exhibition is worthy of accolades and merit, each painting successful in its own right. The use of gesture, painstaking accuracy, atmosphere, texture and verbiage all expressed each individual artist’s desire to communicate to their audience.” Exhibit chairs were Amy Schott and Jessica Huse. It’s Different Strokes by Different Folks at the “BRUSHWORK” Exhibition

Artists from the Rowayton Arts Center will feature their work created with traditional brush strokes with conventional and non-conventional results. Work is done in watercolors, acrylics and oils in the upcoming exhibition, Brushwork. Expect to see the full range of brush strokes from realism to abstract.

“Brushwork” opens Sunday, August 6, with an opening reception from 4 to 6pm. The reception is free and open to the public. Visitors will have the chance to meet the artists and view (and perhaps purchase) their art. Refreshments are served.

The exhibition judge is Artist, Art Educator and Designer Nancy Mctaque-Stock. The Walter Brooks Memorial Award ($250) will be presented to the artist with the most outstanding watercolor. The chairperson is Amy Schott and the co-chair is Jessica Huse.

Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday: 11 – 5pm, Sunday: 1- 4pm.

July 9, 2017….Winners of the Marine & Coastal Exhibit were announced at the Rowayton Arts Center’s opening reception today. Norwalk artist John Harris won Best in Show for his untitled etching. The “Marine and Coastal” exhibit opens July 9 at the Rowayton Arts Center. With its marine and coastal theme, the exhibit is a popular one in this seaside village. The artwork, all by RAC Exhibiting Members, includes paintings, drawings, photographs and sculpture. The opening reception for this show is Sunday, July 9, 4-6pm and is free and open to the public. Press Release: “Focus Under Forty” and “Paint Rowayton” Winners 2017

The buzz is – the BEE by Megan Garbe of Norwalk won Best in Show in “Focus Under Forty.” The exhibit, for artists, ages 18-39, was a showcase of new regional artists and young talent. The judge, Paul DeRuvo, Associate Printer and Manager at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, said of Megan’s piece, “BEE is diminutive in size but it is immediately striking.” The exhibit chairs are Eunice Roy and Yuko Ike and the co-chair is Karen Kent. Two other exhibits are at RAC: “Paint Rowayton” and the RAC Junior Members Show, both in the Portside Gallery. “Paint Rowayton” was a two-week competition for plein air artists, judged by John Harris, a well-known artist in Fairfield County. Leslie Concannon and Jo Ann Davidson were the first place winners for “Paint Rowayton.” All exhibits will be up until June 25.

Catch the rising stars in the next exhibition, “Focus under Forty,” at the Rowayton Arts Center.  This exhibit, exclusively for artists ages 18-39, puts the spotlight on artists you should get to know. Another exhibit, also opening on Sunday, June 4, is “Paint Rowayton.” The exhibit features the work of RAC’S Plein Air painters who will paint scenes of picturesque Rowayton over ten days – May 22 – June 2. So if you see lots of people with easels set up around town, you’ll know why.

Rowayton’s Memorial Day celebration on Sunday, May 28 includes a host of activities for the whole family sponsored by the Art Center. Junior members are in the parade on a float they built. RAC artists and crafters will have booths with their work for sale. Also RAC’s Plein Air painters will be hosting “Paint Out Rowayton” a one-day contest culminating in awards and the sale of their art at 3 pm. Winners of the Community Sponsored Awards were announced on Sunday at the Rowayton Arts Center’s opening reception. Norwalk artist Lori Lohstoeter won Best in Show with her cold wax and oil painting, “Neglecting Picasso (View from MoMA).” Lee Potter Findlay of Findlay Galleries in Manhattan selected the winners. Rowayton Arts Center Announces Winners of “Abstraction”
April 2, 2017… The winners, selected by juror Riad Miah, an educator and award-winning abstract painter from New York City, were announced at Sunday’s opening reception of Abstraction.  Norwalk artist Katharine Draper won Best In Show for her abstract in mixed media, “Entwine,” and was also awarded the Hu Lindsay cash award of $250. This memorial award honors the legacy of Hu Lindsay, a longtime RAC president and graphic designer who died last year. The Lindsay family was at the reception to present the award. The show runs from April 2 through April 23. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday: 11-5pm, Sunday: 1-4 pm. (Closed Monday.)

The Norwalk Arts Commission, in partnership with the Rowayton Arts Center is hosting this year’s SLOW Art Day program on Saturday, April 8th from 10 AM – 12 PM at the Rowayton Arts Center. Riad Miah, an award-winning New York artist and educator, will lead participants in a conversation about artwork he judged for RAC’s Abstraction – Abstracts exhibit. The SLOW art experience offers an intimate, guided look at just a few pieces, along with engaging dialog over light refreshments. According to the Slow Art Day organizers, this international program has grown from 16 museums and galleries in 2009 to more than 190 worldwide in 2016. The Mystic Museum of Art and South Windsor’s, Wood Memorial Library & Museum are among the Connecticut organizations participating this year. The mission of the all-volunteer event is “to help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art.” As Henry David Thoreau said, “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”

ROWAYTON ARTS CENTER FEATURES ABSTRACTS

March 20, 2017 ….The next exhibit at the Rowayton Arts Center flashes spring in bright colors and bold shapes. “Abstraction” opens on Sunday, April 2, 4-6pm; the reception is free and open to the public. Exhibit winners will be announced at the reception.

The juror for this exhibit will be Riad Miah from New York City. Miah, a lecturer, professor and consultant, is also an award winning abstract painter. “I approach the creation of these paintings somewhat as a scientist approaches his/her research: interested in the aesthetics and the process of discovery rather than in solving a problem,” Riad said of his recent work.

“We could not be more pleased and delighted to have Miah join us for this event,” said RAC President, Bruce Horan.

The “Abstraction” exhibition features art in any media, on any theme. Exhibiting artists were encouraged to work with a large degree of independence from realistic representation. Artwork is available for purchase.  The “Abstraction” chairperson is Barbara Seith and co-chair is Ann Marie Tetelman. The exhibit will be up until April 23.

Join us for an Artists Talk on Wednesday, March 15 (6:30-8pm) at the Rowayton Arts Center. Award winning artists from the Inspiration exhibit will speak. Press Release: “Inspiration” 2017

February 26, 2017… Wilton artist wins top prize at the Rowayton Arts Center’s Inspiration exhibition. Leslie Concannon of Wilton won Best In Show not once but twice for her two oil paintings, “Afternoon August” and “Morning August,” and was awarded the cash prize of $250. The exhibition had 196 entries with 88 accepted. The show runs from February 26 through March 26. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday: 11-5pm, Sunday: 1-4 pm.

Press Release: “Inspiration” 2017

The upcoming exhibit “Inspiration” is one of the Rowayton Arts Center’s largest and most popular shows. It is open to all artists. Artists are free to work in any media and on any theme. Best in Show will be awarded a cash prize of $250. Dean Fisher, faculty member of the Silvermine Arts Center, will judge the art. Artists may submit two pieces and the drop off dates are: Tuesday, February 21 (4-7pm) and Wednesday, February 22 (11am-2pm). Opening reception is Sunday, February 26 (4-6pm). The reception is free and open to the public.

Also on Sunday, February 26 (2-4pm) is an Art Demonstration with art instructor, Lenny Moscowitz. This is a free 2-hour demonstration with a focus on abstract art.

Press Release: “Beyond Brushwork” Winners 2017

Weston resident Joel Sobelson won Best in Show at the Rowayton Arts Center’s opening reception of the Beyond Brushwork Exhibit. The winning work was his pastel drawing, “Spotted Owl.” In mixed media, Susan Acker’s “Shore Finds” won 1st place as well as the Gale Parsons Award.

Almost 60 artists entered the exhibit. The art, submitted by RAC Exhibiting Members, was done without any limitations in theme, but the work had to exclude traditional painting with a brush. The gallery, located at 145 Rowayton Avenue in Rowayton, is open 11-5pm, Tuesday through Saturday, and from 1-4pm on Sunday. Admission is free.

Press Release: “Beyond Brushwork” 2017

“Beyond Brushwork” opens at the Rowayton Arts Center on Sunday, January 29. This is the one exhibit where brushes get the brush off. It is an exhibit of everything but traditional paintings: it is digital art, drawings, mixed media, paper cuts, pastels and prints. Exhibiting members think way out of the box –the paint box that is.

The exhibit chair is Kathleen Weinstock and co-chair is Pat Atkin. Josephine Robinson, an instructor at the Silvermine Guild Arts Center in New Canaan, is the exhibition judge. Robinson’s work has been exhibited in London and the U.S. The Gale Parsons Memorial Award will be awarded to the winner in Mixed Media.

On Sunday, January 22 join us for a demonstration by art instructor Sam Morrow. Sam offers his tips on painting with oils.

The Rowayton Art Center kicks off the New Year with an exhibit by art students and instructors, “From the RAC Studio.” This exhibit is all media and open themed; it’s a wonderful showcase of RAC talent. Chaired by Suzy Aubrey, Education Director. Opening reception is Sunday, January 8, (4-6pm). The reception is free and open to the public. Children’s Holiday Workshop

This annual workshop is a fun-filled tradition that has been enjoyed for many years. After parents drop their children off at RAC,  youngsters create cards, decorations, ornaments, and gifts to take home. A variety of interesting materials are provided to inspire young imaginations. The countdown to the holidays begins: 43 days until Christmas Day and 43 days until the first day of Hanukkah! Want to avoid the mad rush of holiday shopping? Get a jump start at the beautiful Holiday Gift Show at the Rowayton Arts Center.

This Holiday Gift Show is a Rowayton tradition. Under the creative eye of Pam Abear, the Art Gallery transforms into a magical winter wonderland. It’s filled with the work of the region’s best artisans. You can find one of a kind, creative presents for everyone on your list. Opening day is Saturday, November 19. Special Opening Weekend Hours: Saturday- Monday, November 19-21: 10:00am -5:00pm.  Show Dates: November 19-December 24.

While you’re there, have a look at Frank Bruckmann’s painting, “Classic Still Life.” Mr. Bruckmann, painter and art instructor, has generously donated his painting (Value: $1950) to the RAC raffle. His work can be found in galleries from Maine to Connecticut. Proceeds from the raffle and Holiday Gift Show are used to support the Art Center and its educational projects.

Press Release: “Turkey Trot” 2016

Rowayton, CT ……….. Before you chow down your fabulous turkey dinner, come see or participate in a popular Rowayton tradition: The Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. In this race, when you register to walk, trot, or run, you help to raise funds for the Rowayton Arts Center, the Rowayton Gardeners and the Rowayton Volunteer Fire Department.

Prizes awarded for Fancy Dress, Best Stroller, Best Male, Best Female, Fastest Kids Under 10 – you have to see these 5K and 1-mile family fun runs. You’ll notice the emphasis is on fun!

Registration begins at 8:30am and the Turkey Trot starts at 9:30am on Thanksgiving Day, November 24. Start and finish at the Community Center/Library at 33 Highland Avenue. Parking available at Graham Capital across the street.

So, turn off the TV, get up off the couch and make the Turkey Trot your family tradition. You’ll be thankful you did.

Press Release: “Expressions” Winners 2016

The “Expressions“ exhibition had a record-breaking number of entries. Judge Sue Brown Gordon commented, “Out of  368 pieces, only 101 were chosen. The award winners are especially commended for their talents as leaders in their field.” Senator Bob Duff, a special guest judge presented for the first time ever, the ‘Senator’s Selection Award.’ It was awarded to Brian Kammerer for his painting, “Hamlet,” a depiction of Shakespeare on the Sound in Rowayton.

ROWAYTON ARTS CENTER’S UPCOMING NEW EXHIBIT, “EXPRESSIONS”

September 23, 2016… The new exhibition,  “Expressions,” opens Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Rowayton Arts Center.  An exhibit featuring the work of both regional RAC members and non-members alike, artists were free to express themselves without restrictions on theme or medium. Expect surprises. One surprise is the guest appearance of Senate Majority Leader Bob Duff, who will award the first annual “Senator’s Selection” prize.  This will be a first for RAC and a first for Norwalk.  Another prize for “Best in Show” is the $250 Mavis Fenner Memorial Award. The juror for the show is Sue Brown Gordon, a painter and jewelry designer. The exhibit is chaired by Yuko Ike and co-chaired by Judy Noel and Kaz Oda.

The public is invited to attend the opening reception free of charge, on Sunday, October 2 (4-6pm) at 145 Rowayton Ave. The Arts Center, located on the bank of the scenic Five Mile River, is a cultural hub where local and regional artists of all ages and levels of expertise gather for education, exhibition and inspiration. Through its classes, gallery, outreach programs and events, the Arts Center endeavors to promote creativity in the arts and to expand its involvement within the community. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 11-5pm, Sunday 1-4pm. “Expressions” will be in the gallery until October 30.

“Photography and Sculpture” Opens in September in Rowayton

Paintings take a back seat in the RAC gallery in September–it’s photography and sculpture front and center. The new exhibit features the work of RAC’s exhibiting members and opens Sunday, September 4. But the opening reception is Sunday, September 11 (4-6pm), delayed due to the Labor Day holiday; it is free and open to the public. “Ageless Art,” by 4 artists with combined lifetime experience of over 300 hundred years will be featured in the Portside Gallery. Featured art by Merion Frolich, Hu Lindsay, Bela Szabo, and Stan Pastore. Portside Gallery Chair is Amy Schott.

The “Photography and Sculpture” chair is Robert Sachs and the co-chair is Anne Salthouse. The judge is award winning commercial photographer, Kevin Robinson. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 12 – 5pm, Sunday, 1 – 4pm.

AND THE WINNERS ARE…

On Sunday, at the Rowayton Arts Center’s opening reception, the winners of the “Brushwork” exhibit were announced. There were 94 entries; the judge was Carmen Lund, faculty member of the Silvermine Arts Center.  Best in Show was awarded to           L. Richard Koleszar for his “Collective Memories.” The Walter Brooks Memorial Award ($250) was presented to the most outstanding watercolor: “Vista Sketch” by Ann Marie Tetelman. The exhibit chairs were Eunice Roy and Susan Leggitt.  The winners are:

Exhibiting members in this exhibit worked only with traditional brush strokes in watercolors, acrylics and oils. Brush strokes ranged from fast, loose and bold to sharp hyper – realism. Floral arrangements—inspired by art—also adorn this exhibit. Arrangements are from Licari Custom Floral Designs by JP of Norwalk and by Adam Manjuck of Flowers and Flowers in Darien.

Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday: 12 – 5pm, Sunday: 1- 4pm. For almost 60 years, the Rowayton Arts Center has been a cultural gem in the Norwalk community.  The RAC Gallery and Art School overlook the scenic Five Mile River in Rowayton, CT at 145 Rowayton Avenue.

ROWAYTON ARTS CENTER PUTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON “BRUSHWORK”

 

Exhibiting members of the Rowayton Arts Center will feature their work created with traditional brush strokes in watercolors, acrylics and oils in RAC’s upcoming exhibit. Expect to see the full range of brush strokes from fast, loose and bold to sharp hyper – realism. You’ll also see floral arrangements—inspired by the art—from Licari Custom Floral Designs by JP of Norwalk and by Adam Manjuck of Flowers and Flowers in Darien.

“Brushwork” opens Sunday, August 7, with an opening reception from 4 to 6pm. The reception is free and open to the public. Visitors will have the chance to meet the artists and view (and perhaps purchase) their art. Refreshments are served.

The exhibition judge is Carmen Lund. The Walter Brooks Memorial Award ($250) will be presented to the artist with the most outstanding watercolor. The chairperson is Eunice Roy and the co-chair is Susan Leggitt. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday: 12 – 5pm, Sunday: 1- 4pm.
